The story centres on Arthur Augustus D?Arcy ? ?Gussy? ? who is accused of punching a New House prefect in the dark. Tom Merry and his companions refuse to believe the accusation and rally to his defence, setting up another lively St. Jim?s adventure.

Published by Mandeville Publications in 1950, Rallying Round Gussy was issued as one of the post-war Tom Merry novels under Hamilton?s Martin Clifford pseudonym. Bibliographical records identify the Mandeville 1950 issue as the first edition.
