8vo. leather, edges gilt, five raised bands, gilt lettering on spine. (iv), xii, 308 pages. First edition (Tooley 298. Not in Field). Illustrated by John Leech with 10 full-colored etchings and 98 woodcut vignettes. John Leech was a staff artist for "Punch" from its early issues in 1841. Gilbert Abbott à Beckett was one of the original staff members for "Punch." One of the Victorian era's best-known comedies. This particular copy is bound in full Chocolate Crushed Morocco, both covers blind ruled, with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Title in gilt lettering on the spine between the first and second band from the top. Guild of Women-Binders ticket in gilt on the lower leather turnin on the front pastedown. Two faint scratches on the front cover. Spine lightly sunned. Leather offsetting onto free endpapers. Moderate foxing on preliminary pages, with a majority of the text and colored plates being uneffected. Title page has small chip in top right corner. No date, c1880. ppXII,308 with decorated title-page printed in black & red, 10 hand-coloured steel-engraved plates including frontispiece, and numerous in-text wood engravings. All edges gilt. Original red cloth, backstrip title & vignettes and front cover vignette in gilt, both front and rear covers with blindstamped ruled borders; cream endpapers. Head and foot of backstrip a little rubbed and inwards-curled. Hinges lightly rubbed. Covers with ingrained dust- & other markings, including sizeable damp-affected patchily darkened patch over upper part of rear. Front cover a little inwards-curled towards upper outer corner, tips of all outer corners rubbed & inwards-curled. Endpapers lightly dust-marked, inner-facing sides of flyleaves a little toned - as are facing half-title at front and final page 308 at rear. Front endpapers also split along hinge, with hinge a little slack; flyleaf with two-line ownership inscription of some age. No dust jacket. Edges of text-block not quite flush.
