First edition. The author's first book. "Facts and figures illustrative of the events of that important period, considered in relation to the three epochs of The Railway Mania, The Food and Money Panic and The French Revolution." A scarce contempory historical account. Also containing an appendix with a list of the "English and Foreign Mercantile Failures, with the Balance Sheets and Statements, of the Most Important Houses." 151 pages, plus 80-page appendix and 16 pages of publisher ads. Evans, was assistant city correspondent on the Times, a post he occupied several years before assuming direction of the money articles in the Morning Herald and Standard. In addition to his regular work, Evans was connected with several other commercial and financial periodicals, among them the Bankers' Magazine, to which he was a principal contributor; the Bullionist; and the Stock Exchange Gazette. He also conducted the literary and statistical departments of the Bankers' Almanac and Diary. This first book was followed by "History of the Commercial Crisis, 1857-8," and the "Stock Exchange Panic, 1859," among others. About very good in somewhat soiled and faded original cloth, which has been rebacked with original spine laid down, and with new endpapers, linen hinges and sewn headbands added.
