Octavo (19.75cm); navy blue cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt and light blue on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [2],xii,[2],3-391,[3]pp, with tissue-guarded frontispiece and seven plates. Both the binding and dustjacket were designed by Margaret Armstrong. Faint foxing to text edges and upper margins of a few plates, else very Near Fine, with the decorative elements entirely unrubbed. In the original dustjacket, gently spine-sunned, showing modest wear, shallow losses to spine ends and upper left corner of rear panel, with several tiny tears and attendant creases, and some faint, scattered foxing; Very Good+. "Here I have written about a few of these books which have borne me good company, in one way or another, and about their authors, who have put the best of themselves into their work" (from the preface). Here Van Dyke writes chapters on the Psalms, Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, Keats, Wordsworth, Browning, Walton, Samuel Johnson, Emerson, and Stevenson.
