"Cabot's Rival" was first collected in THE LAUGHING MILL AND OTHER STORIES (1879) and "Constance" was first collected in PRINCE SARONI'S WIFE AND OTHER STORIES (1882), both collections published only in England and now virtually impossible to obtain. According to Jessica Salmonson, "Cabot's Rival" is "an anglicized version of his first really great weird short, 'The Mysterious Case of My Friend Browne,'" and "Constance" is a "thoroughly horrific novella, an intense Gothic featuring seances, ghosts, murder, and revenge."
