About this Item

Description:

First Edition. Beautifully decorated with Sixty-four Full page Colour Plates from pictures never before reproduced. 4to, publisher's original green cloth, the spine and upper cover lettered and decorated with a pictorial design in gilt, top edge gilt, the other edges uncut. xvi, 287, [16 ads.] pp. An unusually well preserved copy, very handsome and in fine condition with only very light evidence of age mellowing, a tight and strong copy, near as pristine and as original. FIRST EDITION, AND A VERY HANDSOME COPY, ESPECIALLY WELL PRESERVED. A beautifully illustrated work with fine colourplates depicting the beautiful country cottage homes for which England is famous. Helen Allingham (1848-1926) trained as and artist at the Birmingham School of Design, the Royal Female School of Art in London, the Royal Academy Schools and the Slade School of Art in London. She was known especially for her very accurate paintings of British cottages fro which she was admired by John Ruskin. This beautiful book shows the influence of traditional English vernacular architecture on the work of the Arts and Crafts architects, such as Ernet Gimson and E.L. Lutyens. In his preface, the author acknowledges sources he has consulted, notably the "authors and illustrators of Messrs. Batsford's excellent series on old English cottages (especially to the volumes on the Cotswold District, and on Kent and Sussex by Mr. Guy Dawber, and the volume on Surrey by Mr. W. Curtis Green)", both of whom were notable Arts and Crafts architects. Seller Inventory # 33009
