Original uniform green cloth, covers with bevelled edges, backstrips and front covers with title in black & gilt and illustration by John Hassall in black & white. Plain white endpapers. Backstrips a little patchily darkened, with wear at heads and tails. Front hinge of Vol. I with open split from head of length 10cm. Covers here-and-there a little darkened and lightly marked, with wear at outer corners. Front cover of Vol. I also with wear along 2.5cm of fore-edge, and front cover of Vol. II with gilt lightly rubbed. No dust jackets. Endpapers unevenly toned, faintly dust-marked, and with a scattering of a few black specks; rear endpapers of Vol. II also partly split along hinge. Owner's name on front flyleaf of each volume, earlier owner's name on front pastedown of Vol. I. Contents with signs of handling including a number of fingermarks & dust-smudges, mainly light and confined to fore-edge margins.
