Douglas R. Hartree, Calculating Instruments and Machines. Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1949. Advance Review Copy preceding the first edition. Original red cloth boards. Measuring 7 inches by 10 inches. 137 pages. Based on a series of lectures Hartree gave at the University of Illinois on the historical development and contemporary state of calculating devices precipitating the development of the first computers. Originally delivered as a lecture series at the University of Illinois in 1948, "Calculating Instruments and Machines" is a thorough explanation of electronic digital computing and the first of two treatises Hartree wrote on the subject. Here, Hartree develops the powerful methods for numerical analysis that would make it possible for him to calculate atomic wave functions and perform early quantum mechanics. One of the earliest and most important works on computing from the 20th century, Hartree's Calculating Instruments and Machines fundamentally shaped the development of computing and data technologies. Includes 8 black and white photos of early calculating machines such as the Eniac and the Differntial Analyser, as well as multiple diagrams and equations.
