Captain Cook in the Pacific appears in the wake of 'Oceans of Discovery', a new gallery at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, which features Cook in a perspective of scientific exploration at sea (and under it). This book has more limited scope, although it does show how Cook deserves to be seen as the first modern scientific explorer of the oceans. It aims to outline his life and voyages in the context of his times, illustrated largely from the Museum collections.
