Item description from seller

First separate edition. Octavo. 3pp. Unprinted handsewn period wrappers. Engraved plate. Some old dampstaining and dust-soiling along bottom margins, very good. A paper presented by inventor James Hunter in front of the Highland Society of Scotland explaining his wheel odometer that could be used by the country Gentleman with great success and little expense. Hunter touted the accuracy of his odometer as opposed to the ill measurements that could be had from two surveyors using the older chain method. The Society awarded Hunter their Gold Medal. [Reference *Prize Essays and Transactions of the Highland Society of Scotland*, (Edinburgh, 1824) VI:xxxiii.] Not located by OCLC. *COPAC* locates two copies at Edinburgh and the National Library of Scotland. We locate only a later 1825 extract from the Edinburgh Journal of Science, per *OCLC 9744180*.
