HANDSOME FIRST EDITION OF MICHAEL WOOLFSON'S CAPTURE THEORY, PROPOSING THAT THE SOLAR SYSTEM FORMED THROUGH THE CAPTURE OF MATERIAL FROM A DIFFUSE STAR THAT PASSED CLOSE TO THE SUN. "In 1964, a capture theory of the origin of the solar system was put forward by Woolfson. It was proposed that the Sun could have captured planetary material from a light, diffuse star by tidal forces during an encounter, and it was shown that for some set of parameters the captured material could take up a range of orbits around the Sun with perihelia comparable to those observed in the solar system. "The condensation of planets from the captured material was investigated according to the theory of the formation of condensations in a gaseous filament, as given by Jeans (1919), and it was shown that the ejected filament may have been sufficiently dense to have given rise to planets" (Dormand, The Capture Theory and Planetary Condensation, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 151, 1971, p. 307). The volume is illustrated throughout with in-text figures and plates; the Woolfson paper has many in-text illustrations. Handsomely rebound; gilt lettered at the spine. The marbled paper boards were purposefully scuffed by the binder in order that the book, though rebound, appears somewhat aged. Solidly and very tightly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Fine condition.
