The Cardinal (Preview Flier and Advertising Circular)

Two Fliers. Preview flier is printed in black and measures 8½" square. Circular, designed by Saul Bass, is printed in red and black and measures 6" x 9". Circular is irregularly trimmed on two edges and shows very light wear, else both are fine. Two pieces advertising director Otto Preminger's 1963 film *The Cardinal*. The film, based on the Henry Morton Robinson novel, would be nominated for six Academy Awards. It is the story of an American priest's life and struggles "told against the background of two world wars, prohibition, jazz, the Lost Generation, stock market crash, burning crosses of the Ku Klux Klan, Hitler's rise to power." (from the circular). The preview flier advertises a showing at the Madison Theatre "tonight (.) in advance of its Detroit Premiere on Dec. 20 (.) to an invited audience of distinguished community leaders." with a limited number of seats available to the public. Two promotional pieces advertising a 1960's film that deals with life and faith against the backdrop of the harrowing events of the 20th Century.…
