Item description from seller

An unusually rich early collection devoted to one of the major figures of postwar Spanish theater. Along with the three title plays - Cargamento de suenos, Prologo patetico, and Asalto nocturno-the volume gathers contemporary criticism, an interview with Sastre, three of his polemical essays, manifestos and documents concerning Spanish theater, bibliography, and Sastre's own account of his theatrical development. Contributors include Jose Monleon, Domingo Perez Minik, Ricardo Domenech, Jose María de Quinto, Jose María García Escudero, and Eduardo Haro Tecglen. Bibliographical records confirm the 1964 Taurus edition as 254 pages and No. 3 in the Primer Acto theater collection. The historical setting is especially good. Sastre wrote Cargamento de sueños in 1946 and his experimental group Arte Nuevo premiered it in Madrid in 1948; Prologo patetico was written in 1949-50 and revised in 1953 but remained unperformed, while Asalto nocturno was completed in 1959. Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes The book therefore deliberately places plays from widely separated phases of his development alongside the documents explaining that development. This was particularly appropriate for Primer Acto: Sastre himself had been a member of the original editorial board when Jose Monleón and Jose Ángel Ezcurra founded the influential theater journal in 1957. The copyright page gives © 1964 Taurus Ediciones, registration 5/64 and Madrid legal deposit M.4712-1964: the colophon states that printing was completed 27 April 1964 at E. Sánchez Leal in Madrid. Condition: Very Good. Binding remains sound and the text block is clean and complete, with the expected even toning of the inexpensive period paper. Yellow wrappers remain striking and unusually bright, showing moderate handling and edge wear, corner rubbing/creasing, and several shallow creases, most noticeably at the upper rear wrapper. Integral flaps remain present. Small unobtrusive pencil notation near the front: no extensive annotation observed. A very respectable surviving copy of a rather fragile Spanish theatrical paperback. The index reveals sections devoted to "De la obra al hombre," competing critical assessments of his theater, Sastre's own polemical articles, documents and manifestos, bibliography, and his theatrical itinerary before arriving at the plays themselves. A contemporary listing describes the same extensive documentary contents. Todo Coleccion That matters because Cargamento de suenos belongs to the very beginning of Sastre's career. Arte Nuevo premiered it on 9 January 1948 at Madrid's Instituto Ramiro de Maeztu, during the group's short-lived attempt to create an experimental alternative to conventional Spanish theater. Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes The Spanish Ministry of Culture describes Sastre (1926-2021) as a dramatist, novelist, essayist, screenwriter and translator and specifically identifies Arte Nuevo and Cargamento de suenos with his early campaign to renew the Spanish stage, There is also an appealing bibliographical circularity: Sastre was on the founding editorial board of Primer Acto in 1957, and seven years later this volume became No. 3 of its book-length Coleccion de Teatro. The magazine itself describes its long-standing mission as defending theater's social as well as artistic function.…
