Man’s special and timeless bond with the cat is a constant in the ever-changing city of Cairo. A picture book for cat fanatics, fans of Egypt, and those with an interest in folklore, these are cats and Cairo as they’ve never been seen before. The photographs encompass Cairo in the present day using the street cat as the focus. Complemented by apposite literary passages from the folklore, religion and poetry of Egypt and the Arab world, the pictures give us an insight into an animal that has inspired fascinating tales from 5000 years ago to the present. With an opening historical essay by Annemarie Schimmel, here is a book that can educate as well as entertain by using the charismatic cat as the central theme.
During her seven-year stay in Cairo, Lorraine Chittock also searched the nooks and crannies where feline denizens of the city hide. "They don’t hang out," says Chittock, "they slink." To obtain private portraits of these wary animals, Ms. Chittock had to become "a wildlife tracker in an urban environment."
Ms. Chittock now lives in Kenya with an ever changing assortment of animals. Her husband remains a constant. Her focus continues to be on projects that celebrate the powerful relationship between animals and people.
