About the Author

Lorraine Chittock was born in California in 1960. After leaving college, she sampled a variety of occupations that augmented her income and experience of life before focusing on a career in photojournalism. Growing wanderlust and a sense of professional adventure eventually took her to Cairo in 1991 to work for Egypt Today magazine. Her fascination with the camel caravan trade culminated in her highly acclaimed coffee-table book, Shadows in the Sand-Following the Forty Days Road, a personal account of her arduous desert trek along an ancient caravan route from Sudan into Egypt with 200 camels and eight Sudanese men.

During her seven-year stay in Cairo, Lorraine Chittock also searched the nooks and crannies where feline denizens of the city hide. "They don’t hang out," says Chittock, "they slink." To obtain private portraits of these wary animals, Ms. Chittock had to become "a wildlife tracker in an urban environment."

Ms. Chittock now lives in Kenya with an ever changing assortment of animals. Her husband remains a constant. Her focus continues to be on projects that celebrate the powerful relationship between animals and people.
