This volume on the cellular functions of membrane transport contains the papers presented at the annual symposium of the Society of General Physiologists held September 4-7, 1963, at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The papers represent a variety of approaches to the study of membrane transport, yet all have as their basis the consideration of transport mechanisms as they relate to other cellular processes. The content is distinctive in that it is composed of contributions from both plant and animal physiologists, and their subjects for the study of the phenomenon range from microorganisms to mammals and higher plants.
