About this Item
The first edition of this Celtic scholar's influential but inaccurate work. This first edition is the work of the Welsh writer and Anglican clergyman known as Edward 'Celtic' Davies. This, his most important work, examines the origins of the Celtic language and the meaning of Celtic mythology. Influential in his time and later, Davies' works are now viewed as wildly inaccurate and speculative; not fluent in the languages he sought to translate between, he utilised unreliable sources and guesswork in his attempts to align Celtic myth with Biblical history.Romantic poet William Blake took a keen interest in Davies' publications. To the front free endpaper is an inscription dated 1899. In the original imitation leather cloth binding. Both front and rear boards are detached, with spine panel loosening to the head. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, text block itself is generally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright. Fair. Seller Inventory # 775F19
