Offered is "The Challenge of the Contented Extrovert," the text of a sermon given by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman and published in print form as the Sermon of the Month for January 1958 by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles (a specific date when the sermon was given to his Church congregation is not provided). A stapled pamphlet measuring 5-1/2" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers (11 pages of text). A brief excerpt from the Rev. Fritchman's address to his congregation: "No one knows better than I that many millions of us are in danger of being transformed into contented extroverts, if we let ourselves go. If we accept purely material standards of happiness, if we wrap our minds neatly in plastic bags and store them away for some future contingency, if we decide our elected or self-appointed fathers know best what should be done with our economy, our culture and our government - and even our religion - then we can wake up some bright Spring morning and find the human enterprise, for all intents and purposes, is over. We will have become gamma mechanics, shorn of deep affection, intellectual contradictions, or moral values. We will remain, happily for industry, 24-hour consumers of the international product - little or nothing more." Previously, but lightly, folded. The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.
