About this Item
[nice clean book with minimal wear; jacket also quite nice, with just one teeny-tiny chip at top of front panel]. "A human, touching story told with delicacy and warmth of two women to whom the little things of life assumed tremendous importance. This charming novel, as it follows Penelope and Charlotte through the years in their eternal quest for husbands, gives a cutting yet endearing picture of two frustrated lives." The Chicago Tribune critic thought the novel "might well be called the definitive study in frustration." (But "charming" and "endearing" would seem to be some optimistic blurb-writer's spin; the most frequent term used by reviewers to describe the sisters' relationship is "hatred.") The book won an Avery Hopwood Award at the University of Michigan, but it didn't launch much of a career for Fynette Rowe, who wrote just one more novel after this one, "The Burning Spring," published in 1947.
