Once upon a time the world was full of miracles. And Chartres was of all places, one of the most miraculous. It lies at the very edge of the vast, rolling plain of Beauce, the great wheat growing area of northern France, so that pilgrims would see its spire on the rocky hill above the River Eure, days before they reached their destination. The decorated boards, binding and text block are all square, tight and crisp and appear to be in an unread condition. The red decorated slipcase is in a similar condition.
