First Edition. Hardcover. Dr James Sheridan Muspratt (8 March 1821 - 3 February 1871) was an Irish-born research chemist and teacher. His most influential publication was his two-volume book Chemistry, Theoretical, Practical and Analytical as app.lied and relating to the Arts and Manufactures (1857-1860). The thirty engraved plates comprise portraits of Sir Humphrey Day, Gay-Lussac, Andrew Ure, Lavoisier, John Dalton, Liebig, Chevreul, Joseph Priestley, Chaptal, Faraday, and other distinguished scientists. Includes articles on acetic acid, alcohol, arsenic, beer, bleaching, bread, caoutchouc, dyeing and calico-printing, ether, glass, gunpowder, gutta-percha, leather, mercury, opium, paper, perfumery, photography, silver, soap, wine, and other chemistry and chemical substances, as compiled by a chemistry instructor for education uses. From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks, the renowned neurologist, author, and educator. He was, in his life, celebrated for his contributions to the understanding of the human brain and his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a broader audience. In doing so, he highlighted the profound impact of neurological disorders on human identity and experience. His library is a reflection of this remarkable polymath's questing mind.
