Original publisher's dark blue cloth, decorated in blind and in gilt, the smooth spine in five gilt-ruled compartments, lettered in one and decorated in the rest, all edges gilt (a bit rubbed with minor loss to extremities). Provenance: With the bookseller's ticket of S. K. Whipple & Co. (Boston) to recto of front free endpaper. First edition. "A beautiful book upon aboriginal manners and history" (Field). Noteworthy for the detailed engravings after drawings by Seth Eastman, the author's husband. "Captain and Mrs. Eastman were stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, from 1841 through 1848. Already an accomplished artist, Captain Eastman recorded the daily life of the Sioux and Winnebago who lived in the area. Eastman's drawings formed the basis for the illustrations in all of Mary Eastman's books.
