Synopsis

This book, a study of the informal classroom methods used successfully in many English infant and junior schools, is the report of two young American teachers who, for one year, observed schools in England and talked with teachers, parents, and children. Strong acceptance of informal approaches is conveyed because, despite some weaknesses, such approaches make learning a productive and balanced experience for children. While some comparisons of English and American children are valid, it should not be assumed that the sum total of work now taking place in the better English schools should or could be exported whole to the United States. A study of English failures as well as achievements is needed to promote a more complete understanding of the inner workings and philosophy of the best English programs.
