Half title and last blank lightly foxed, closed tears in folding map neatly repaired with archival tape with evidence of a previous repair on the rear, but map in very good order. Original attractive pictorial black cloth stamped in gilt, with closed tears at either edge of the head of the spine and a closed split to the front gutter but still a sound and clean copy. 18.6 x 12.5cm. The former member of parliament spent some eight months travelling through China, Japan and Korea, 'with the special object of ascertaining from the best informed men on the spot, what the political and commercial situation really was. " I visited most of the centres of political interest and of commercial activity, and also journeyed over 5,000 miles in the interior of China."
