First edition, 8vo, pp. [8], 278; frontispiece portrait of the author and 32 illustrations from photographs on rectos and versos of 19 plates; binding a little dull but generally a very good, sound, and clean copy in original green cloth stamped in gilt on spine and upper cover. Presentation copy to "Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Starr with kind regards and compliments of Rosa Palmborg." Cornelius Vander Starr (1892-1968) "moved to Yokohama, Japan, and, by the age of 26, was working as a clerk with the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Less than a year later, Mr. Starr moved on to Shanghai, where, in 1919, he established American Asiatic Underwriters-the first American-owned insurance agency in Shanghai. [He had] a diversified career as a journalist, a lawyer, an international businessman, a publisher and a philanthropist" (Columbia University Libraries). For her part, Palmborg (1867-1953) was a Seventh Day Baptist Medical Missionary to China for 46 years, 1894-1940.
