Jack Bennett, a young white man from a working-class background, who, along with his identical twin Dave, enjoys "roughing up a stranger"?specifically, black men?as a recreational activity. Their violence backfires one night when their victim fights back; Jack returns home alone, only to learn the next morning that Dave is missing and implicated in a fatal car accident that also involved a young black doctor. As the police investigate, Jack is forced to confront the violence and bigotry of his past. His journey for the truth brings him into contact with the dead doctor's sister, Michelle, a relationship that forces Jack to question his lifelong racial prejudices and grapple with the deep-seated class and racial divisions of London society.
