First edition, late issue, with "published February, 1907" on copyright page, and the frontispiece with a facsimile rather than printed signature; but with 18 titles listed in the list of uniform works and list of illustrations set in 6 lines; 8vo, pp. [6], 362; frontispiece and two plates; full red publisher's cloth gilt; spine a touch sunned, bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian on upper pastedown, title leaf starting, very good. Bookplate of James Mead. "Bibliographically the book presents one of the most difficult problems I have ever undertaken and even today, after years of study and comparison am I still unconvinced that I have been able to make any definite forward strides" (Merle Johnson, A Bibliography of the Works of Mark Twain, as quoted by BAL). BAL adds: "A continuation of the study leaves little to add to Johnson's statement.
