?? [Chunhui] [Spring Sunshine].

Issued in 1984, this idealised poster depicts Chairman Mao with other Chinese leaders. Text in simplified Chinese characters, 52.5 x 76cm, some light undulation, two closed tears (now repaired) around margins, colours very vivid, overall in very good condition. This 1984 poster, from an original painting by ??? Wei Zhigang, is a depiction of Mao Zedong sitting in a spring garden with 15 other important state, Party, and military leaders, both past and present; a poster probably designed to show a stamp of approval for the twice purged Deng Xiaoping, who in the late 1970s rose to become paramount leader. The image includes the Nine Marshals, a small grouping of Deng Xiaoping's political supporters, possibly Chen Yun, Li Xiannian and another figure, who could be Bo Yibo, as well as the then deceased Liu Shaoqi, recently rehabilitated by Deng. The deceased Chairman Mao and Zhou Enlai gaze beatifically at a suitably modest side-on image of Deng in a heavenly blossom-filled setting, reminiscent of "The Peach Blossom Spring", signalling ideological continuity and providing Deng's leadership with Mao and Zhou's imprimatur. The title of the poster "Spring Sunshine" also conveys the meaning "Parental Love". Such commemorative posters were intended to depict the unity of state, Party, and military leadership. …
