Wardle was an army officer and, whilst serving as an M.P., developed an interest in corruption in the army. He alleged that Prince Frederick's mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, was promising promotion to officers in return for money. Wardle pursued a legal case against the Duke of York and secured his resignation as commander-in-chief. Following this resignation it emerged that Wardle had negotiated with Clarke regarding Prince Frederick before his parliamentary attack and that her testimony was bought.Mary Anne Clarke was the great-great-grandmother of Daphne du Maurier, who wrote a novel about her life, 'Mary Anne'.
