Honorable White, who is mentioned several times in the book, was a self-made man, postmaster, storekeeper, lawyer, book dealer, politician, and philanthropist. He became one of the most prominent citizens of Marquette, Michigan, where, among other things, he established funding for a public library, donated money to build the Morgan Chapel, and helped fund the Opera House.
