Brand new HARDCOVER copy. Ships from the UK with delivery in 2-3 days. 1st edition. 238 pp. Gloriously illustrated in colour. 11 x 10 x 1 inches. Illustrated with reproductions of more than 70 sculptures along with prints, drawings and pages from the artist's sketchbooks. This South African artist is known for her distinctive carved and painted wooden sculptures that reflect the ambiguities of the search for a post-apartheid African identity. Her work is influenced by the traditional Blolo and Colon figures of West Africa, as well as other stylistic input from medieval church sculpture, Spanish portraiture, and Egyptian woodcarving. Schreuders' personal history as a white descendent of colonial settlers in South Africa is reflected in these pieces, which are physical representations of human emotions. This book includes beautiful reproductions of Schreuders' works, two in-depth essays and a biography of the artist, making this the definitive volume on one of the pre-eminent South African artists working today.
