8vo, pp [334], bound in contemporary full tree calf, spine gilt ruled with red label, minor rubbing and wera at head else a fine clean copy, SECOND EDITION, much enlarged from the first of 1764, with, according to the author, many new words, and a long and Calendarium added at the end. John Berkenhout [1726-91] was something of a linguist and classical scholar as well as scientist, a very rounded intellect as can be gleaned from his excellent preface, where he extolls aquintance with Latin for students of botany and the new Linnaean system, he himself having been a student at the University of Edinburgh when the first edition appeared. An excellent and attractive copy of this most desirable copy with the Castle Forbes bookplate and likely signature of Selina Frances to the title page.
