The Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters.: Edited by Sonia Orwell and Ian Angus.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1968. Pp. xxiii + 574 [&] xv + 477 [&] xv + 435 [&] xvii + 555, illus with b&w frontispieces (no inscriptions). First collected edition, first impression, of Orwell's works. Scholars rate this 1968 collected edition as a watershed in Orwell's reputation, "enabling us to see exactly how complex and varied a writer Orwell was compared to what we had concluded on the basis of the major novels alone" (Schlueter, p. 95). The text was edited by Orwell's widow Sonia, and by Ian Angus, who helped set up the Orwell Archive at University College, London. Much of the material had never previously been published. 4 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, blue endpapers. With unclipped dust jackets. Portrait frontispiece and manuscript facsimile to each volume. A bright fine set displaying no fading to the spines.
