96 pages. Slim 8vo, rebound in modern brown polished calf (some light dampstaining in gutter of first several leaves, otherwise rather clean; untrimmed pages a bit soft at fore-edge margin). The Hague, 1782, probably printed for private distribution. True first edition [reprinted in London later the same year]. A very scarce printing in which Adams, as commissioner to the Netherlands, secured the treaty by which that country recognized our independence. Includes an account of the reception of the first American ambassador. OCLC lists 21 copies. The important privately printed first edition of Adams' negotiations with Holland for diplomatic recognition and, subsequently, a highly important loan to the new young republic. "In January 1782 Adams demanded of the ministers of the republic and the deputies of the city a reply to his memorial of Apr. 19 asking for recognition. Three months later he was formally recognized, whereupon he submitted a plan of a treaty, which was signed in October, and made proposals for and secured the first loan." --Sabin 228; ESTC; N27676.…
