A collection of memorabilia from Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 Progressive Party presidential campaign, the insurgent third-party bid that gave the "Bull Moose" its name. The group comprises: The Roosevelt Bandanna, a Progressive Party campaign bandanna printed on cotton with a red field and white diamond motifs, lettered "The Roosevelt Bandanna" and "Progressive Party," made by the Cochrane Manufacturing Company circa 1912 and measuring 22.5 inches by 24 inches; a 1912 Progressive Party Charter Membership certificate, picturing Theodore Roosevelt and his running mate Hiram W. Johnson and captioned "Pass Prosperity Around" ; and a 1912 Progressive Party "Bull Moose" founder's pin. In fine to near fine condition with the usual folds and light soiling to the bandana and certificate. In 1912, after failing to wrest the Republican nomination from his former protege William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt broke away to run for president on the ticket of the newly formed Progressive Party. Asked about his health, Roosevelt declared himself "fit as a bull moose," and the nickname stuck to the party. Running on a reform platform of New Nationalism that called for social insurance, women's suffrage, and curbs on corporate power, and famously delivering a campaign speech in Milwaukee shortly after being shot, Roosevelt outpolled Taft to finish second, the strongest showing by any third-party candidate in American history, though the split among Republicans handed the White House to Woodrow Wilson.…
