FIRST FRENCH EDITION edited by Marquart of a collection of 163 inaugural theses and other medical tracts on surgery, partly presided by Haller in Göttingen. Haller's object was to illustrate a single disease, fatal cases where a post mortem had been made or where some trusty remedy had cured the patient. The in all 163 dissertations, ranging from 1666 to 1752, are presided over by Haller and such famous physicians as Lorenz Heister, Bernard Friedrich Albinus, Alexander Camerarius, Johann Sigismund Elsholtz, Jacob Benignus Winslow, Johann Adam Kulmus, and Friedrich Hoffmann. The collection is valuable as showing the subjects which interested surgeons during this period. They would have been lost to posterity if Haller had not preserved those which he considered to be the best either, as he says, on account of the full and accurate descriptions of disease, of new instruments invented or of unusual precautions adopted.
