Edge and corner worn, scuffed and scratched, corners are bumped and rubbed, shelf worn, pages are toning and foxing, top of the spine is chipped away, overall a clean readable used vintage first edition! Brown pictorial cloth with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Marbled page-edges. 461 historical and grammatical pages in the main section of the book and a 145 page German and English vocabulary section. "The present volume is intended as a companion to my grammars of the German language. The student may begin to use it with either of them as soon as the rudimentary difficulties of the German are overcome, if he is anxious to form an early acquaintence with the classical productions of its celebrated writers. With many students in our higher schools and colleges where the time devoted to German is as yet very short, this is the main, if not the only motive." ----- from the Preface Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
