(Indiana Historical Collections Vol. XXX.) Among many other accomplishments, Thompson (1809-1900) was appointed secretary of the navy by Hayes. While in that position he took on a $25,000 a year position as Chairman of the American Committee of the Panama Canal Company. Hayes promptly accepted Thompson's unoffered resignation. According to the DAB, "few of his contemporaries among public men were so frequently attacked on ethical grounds." Includes frontispiece and index. 315 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
