Description:
First edition. Original brown cloth binding with gilt text on spine. Handsome vertical wave grain in the cloth, with a blind-stamped image of a color-guard soldier on the center of both boards. Spine ends have slight wear/bumping. Tips are in excellent condition for a book of this age. Three small spots on front board. Yellow pastedown/fly. Interior pages are unmarked, no prior ownership information or marginalia. James K. Hosmer (1834-1927), born in Northfield, Massachusetts, was a historian, a Union soldier in the American Civil War, and prior to the war had been the pastor of the unitarian First Church of Deerfield, Massachusetts. During the Civil War, Hosmer enlisted as a private in the 52nd Massachusetts Infantry, participating in the trans-Mississippi theater of the war at Bayou Teche, and the Siege of Port Hudson The Color-Guard contains descriptions of Louisiana during the war, and Hosmer's first encounter with black Union troops.
