Colossus was the world's first programmable, electronic, digital computer, designed by Tommy Flowers to break the German Lorenz cipher SZ42 during WWII. By using 2,500 thermionic valves, it automated labor-intensive statistical methods, allowing codebreakers at Bletchley Park to read high-level strategic German messages quickly.
