Seller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB., London, United Kingdom
First edition, first impression, presentation copy of this war memoir, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To dearest Daph and John with very much love and in memory of many happy days together and in expectation of many more. Peter Kemp. 4th November, 1958". In 1940, Kemp (1915-1993) joined Military Intelligence (Research) - later the Special Operations Executive (SOE). "In 1942, as a member of the small-scale raiding force, he took part in night raids on the German-held Channel Islands and continental coast. In August 1943 he parachuted into occupied Albania, where he spent many months working with communist and anti-communist guerrilla groups, was in contact with Enver Hoxha, the communist guerrilla leader and future dictator of Albania, and had several narrow escapes from death. After his evacuation from Montenegro in February 1944, Kemp at the end of that year parachuted into occupied Poland, where he and his SOE mission, under the command of Colonel D. T. ('Marko') Hudson, were overrun and imprisoned by the advancing Red Army, to be released only several weeks later. In the last days of the war against Japan, [he] was dropped into Thailand, where he ran arms across the border to the French in Laos. For his work with SOE he was awarded a DSO in 1945. 'There may be braver men than Peter Kemp', recalled one SOE colleague, 'but I am not certain that I have met any of them'" (ODNB). Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt. With illustrated dust jacket. With 12 half-tone plates, maps in text. Spine ends sunned, edges toned and foxed; jacket unclipped, large loss to rear panel and losses at spine ends, several closed tears, recent adhesive tape repairs on verso: a very good copy in good only jacket.
