First U.S. Edition, First Printing of this novel of theatrical players in provincial Poland by Nobel Prize laureate Wladyslaw S. Reymont. First novel by Reymont translated into English and his first book published in the United States. Published in advance of Reymont's selection as Nobel laureate but the introduction notes that he had been nominated for the prize. Includes a frontspiece color illustration by Frederick Dorr Steele on which the publisher has pasted a credit line for Steele. Blue cloth with gilt titles, 499 pages. There is soiling on the front cover, a previous owner name written twice on the front endpapers and the front hinge is a bit loose. Seller Inventory # 008054
