This volume contains a collection of twenty-six essays by Virginia Woolf, ranging from classical Greek literature to contemporary English fiction. Originally appearing in publications such as The Times Literary Supplement and The Dial, these pieces were revised by Woolf for their first appearance in book form. The American edition is notable for including the essay Miss Ormerod, which was not present in the British Hogarth Press edition of the same year. This copy represents the first state of the text for the American market, issued shortly after the London release.
