Limited Autograph Edition edited by Richard Garnett, Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. Illustrated throughout with numerous etchings, engravings, and photographic plates by many of the foremost Victorian artists, including George Cruikshank, Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), John Tenniel, Marcus Stone, Luke Fildes, and others. Handsomely bound in publisher's deep maroon half morocco over marbled boards, with bright gilt spine titling and gilt rose devices between raised bands; marbled endpapers; top edges gilt; deckled fore and bottom edges. Each volume retains its frontispiece and tissue guard.

Contents include many of Dickens's most celebrated works, among them The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Little Dorrit, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, together with the Christmas Books and other writings.

One of the most attractive collected editions of Dickens issued at the turn of the twentieth century, combining a comprehensive illustration program with an elegant and highly decorative binding design. The set includes the complete Dickens canon in thirty volumes, richly illustrated with original etchings and engravings drawn from many of the artists most closely associated with Dickens's works.

A very good plus set overall. Bindings sound and secure throughout the thirty volumes. Interiors exceptionally bright, clean, and unmarked, with several volumes retaining unopened leaves. Gilt remains bright across the set. General wear is limited to scattered rubbing at spine extremities, most notably to portions of Volumes 2?20; Volume 5 with small chips and a short split at the crown; Volume 7 with a crease and wear at the crown; Volumes 8?9 with a few small dark spots to the spine leather; Volume 10 with rubbing at the crown; and Volume 16 with a larger chip at the crown (see photographs). Boards remain secure with no cracked joints. Later volumes, including the Christmas Books, Christmas Stories, and Edwin Drood, display particularly light wear. A handsome and increasingly scarce complete Dickens library, notable both for its breadth of illustration and its impressive shelf presence.
