12mos (6"x3"). Burgundy flex covers with giltstamped art nouveau decorations, frontises with tissue. All volumes: sunfading and gilt loss to spines, gilt loss to top-edges (upper covers bright). Light spotting to covers. Textblock edges toned, faint insect damage to fore-edges. Light tone to interiors, foxing to frontises and tissue. Slight warp to textblocks. Vol.I: dampstain to frontis. Vol.III: Vol.XVI: dampstain to upper cover, gutter exposed at p.5. Vol.V: closed tears to p.161-165. Vol.VIII: dampstains to lower cover. Vol.X: gauge to fore-edge p.42-124 (see 5th picture), does not occlude text. Vol.XI: white ink to lower cover (see 6th picture). Vol.XII: dampstain to frontis. Vol.XV: dampstain to lower cover. Vol.XVI: gutter exposed at p.7. Vol.XVII: gutter exposed at p.3. All bindings are sound. Missing original wooden box. This "Virginia Edition" is the first edition of Poe's complete works to include texts rejected or tampered with in the earlier 1850 edition published by Poe's rival Rufus Griswold; it excludes the fabricated biographical details that led to Poe's defamation. The Virginia Edition is considered a superior, though later edition.
