First American edition, first printing of Ryle's founding work in the philosophy of mind, cited as having "put the final nail in the coffin of Cartesian dualism." Published the same year as the UK first edition. New York: Barnes & Noble, 1949. Publisher's original cloth, lettered in white; pp. 334. An about near fine copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket. Binding remains sturdy, minor wear to board extremities, internally clean. Jacket general light shelfwear with some loss near spine tips, spine and edges of panels toned. A nice copy, uncommon and protected in archival mylar.
