Sir Malcolm Sargent, conductor, of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with Jacqueline Du Pré as cello soloist, in Edward Elgar, cello concerto in e minor. Program notes about the Elgar cello concerto are on p. 6 (see photo). Du Pré's first performance of the Elgar cello concerto with Malcolm Sargent was in August 1962 at her debut at the Proms at age 17. She performed Elgar again with Sargent in August 1963 at the Proms [this concert] at age 18. "Her playing received accolades from the public and the critics alike, and Sargent was so moved that he came straight into Jackie's greenroom and announced 'I have conducted all the great cellists, but never enjoyed a performance as much as tonight's' (Elizabeth Wilson, Jacqueline du Pré, p. 116). Wilson goes on to quote from Edward Greenfield's enthusiastic review of the concert in the Guardian. In September 1964 she performed Elgar with Sargent at the Proms for a third time. Her fourth performance at the Proms of Elgar with Sargent, on September 1, 1965, was a 70th birthday concert for Sargent. Although Du Pré did perform two more times at the Proms (1967, 1969), the concert in 1965 was her last performance of Elgar at the Proms.…
