Among those who followed Gray was on C.H. Leonard, a gynecologist from Michigan who saw the need for a more compact ready-reference work, base on Gray's original but condensed and much more concise, with the work of other medical authors consulted and incorporated, and section of his own added to help student and practitioner alike — in effect, a "dissecting-room companion" as he himself called it. Originally entitled "The Pocket Anatomist", this book was an immediate success and sold in enormous quantities. Published in England by the long-established firm of medical publishers Bailliere, Tindall & Cox by 1889 it had reached its sixteenth edition and been considerably expanded with more text and illustrations, yet by compact arrangement of the engravings and the use of an economical prose style the whole volume was still just under 300 pages, compared with over 1200 in "Gray". It is this sixteenth edition which is presented here, almost 100 years after its first appearance. The text has been entirely reset in clear, crisp type and the 193 illustrations — the vast majority of which are from Gray's original work — have been re-worked and sometimes re-arranged on the page to give a clearer disposition, while the labels surrounding the diagrams have been entirely reset in clearer type. It would seem fitting tribute to this brilliant "little book" for it to be given its proper place in medical history, and Dr. Henry Gray himself would surely have nodded his approval.
