A history and description of the infantry small arms manufactured in, by, and for the Southern Confederacy between 1861 and 1865.

This volume is the culmination of many years of exhaustive research into long-forgotten records, as well as examination of the "long" longarms that were produced in the South for Confederate forces during the Civil War. Many of these arms are herein correctly identified for the first time.

The time in which Confederate arms were used, the crisis that necessitated their making, and the uses to which they were put have long intrigued arms collectors and researchers. "Confederate Rifles & Muskets" puts those arms in their proper perspective as valuable historic and cultural relics of a brave people, and of the romantic era in which they fought a valiant but vain struggle.

Dr. John M. Murphy's grandfather and two great-uncles fought with Virginia during the War Between the States, which inspired a lifelong interest in the Southern Confederacy and the arms that served her. Dr. Murphy's personal collection, doubtless the largest and finest grouping of Confederate longarms in private hands, comprised the primary basis for this study. It now resides in the Greensboro Historical Museum, North Carolina.

Museum curator and researcher, Howard Michael Madaus is a nationally recognized authority on the flags and military colors of the Confederacy, and the author of a number of scholarly books and articles on American firearms and military history.
