The history of Augusta Parish (Trinity Church) is intimately entwined with the history of Augusta County and the City of Staunton. The parish's founding precedes the city's by a year. The membger of the parish vestry in the early days were chosen because of their importance within the secular community. In fact, most of the vestrymen were Presbyterians, a group that then and now outnumbered Episcopalians. Only John Madison, uncle of the future President and father of the first Bishop of Virginia, was a communicant of the Church of England. Trinity Church is still intimately entwined with the city and surrounding county. Many from the Church have servied on the City Council, as Mayor, and on a variety of government and volunteer boards.
