[656pp]: xx, 636; sewn signatures glued with card endleaves in unprinted card covers, with jacket glued to spine ($2.75 on flap); 216 x 147 x 31 mm. The German-Jewish immigrant's first book in his adopted country, first edition proper (published much later in Germany); translated from German by Barrows Mussey, with an Introduction by Franz Werfel (who first encountered the work as a play & suggested adapting it as a novel). Issued 26 July 1943 at $2.75 in cloth, making it likely that the present copy was issued for review (this format otherwise unrecorded); no notice of an advance copy is anywhere in evidence. Later copies of the book were supplied with a separate Index of Characters. The fragile jacket (though predictably dusty) exhibits remarkably little wear: a tiny split at heel of lower joint, & two closed tears at crown rear. A scarce wartime title which is highly elusive in jacket; the present paperback issue (likely an advance copy) remains obscure.
